Mamata convenes urgent meeting to discuss Subhendu Adhikari issue

November 27, 2020 07:44 PM
Kolkata, 27 November || Chief minister Mamata Banerjee convened an emergency meeting with senior Trinamool Congress leaders and her cabinet colleagues at her South Kolkata residence here this evening after reportedly accepting the resignation of Transport and Irrigation minister Subhendu Adhikasti setting off huge political shockwave in the state.

According to the sources, the meeting which is in all likelihood, would discuss the situation arising out of the stepping down of Subhendu Adhikari from the state cabinet. The party's next step of action might also discuss the decision of TMC MLA from Coochbehar Mihir Goswami who had  snapped all relations with  the ruling party by resigning from its primary membership today.

Today's meeting at Mamata Banerjee's residence at Kalighat,  are being attended by West Bengal Trinamool Congress President Subrata Bakshi, MP, her nephew and Trinamool Youth Congress President Avishek Banerjee, MP,  Education minister Partha Chatterjee, Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim and PWD and Youth Affairs minister Arup Biswas among some others.

Since the Chief minister has reportedly accepted the resignation of Subhendu Adhikari, she might also take a decision to distribute his cabinet portfolios - Transport and Irrigation - among  other ministers, informed sources said and stated that Subhendu had also resigned from the Chairmanship of Haldia Development Authority as a mark of protest. However there was no official confirmation to it so far.

Meanwhile, according to senior political observers here that the dual blow  from Subhendu Adhikari and Mihir Goswami on the same day today and their decision to severe links from the ministry and the party respectively might severely affect the poll prospects of TMC in the coming state Assembly elections since both the leaders were considered to be  having wide support base in their respective districts in both South and North Bengal causing serious concern among the party's top leadership.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee earlier in her two recent public rallies in Bankura district this week had made it clear that she was keeping a close watch on the activities of some party leaders and would not hesitate to take stringent action against them if needed. This warning might have led these leaders to take their new stand  after  remaining sidelined in the party for sometime, the political observers here felt.

Now it remains to be seen what action was to be taken by the top leaders of TMC  against the two revel colleagues.
